The Obstacles with Motivation Faced by Business Owners

If you are a single entrepreneur and responsible for almost everything in your business.

You also have limited resources at your disposal. In order to achieve the outcomes you seek; it is necessary for you to have a firm grasp on your priorities. Then you will push yourself to reach your goals. That’s how it works. There are a lot of professionals and business owners that struggle with getting done the long list of duties each day. It is possible that you may be required to do many types of things. Some duties include bookkeeping, administration, technical, marketing, and sales all at the same time. At first, doing everything in this manner may look like an effective technique to get everything done. But at some time, you will realize that this is an impossible to get this all done.

I am aware of what has to happen, but I just can’t seem to get it done!

It is only a matter of time until you realize that you are unable to do some of those jobs. Then the ones that are less appealing end up on the “I’d rather not list” of things to do. Many people will place a chore like as prospecting or filing on this list. Possibly you may talk yourself into taking extra day off work. Or even begin to get into the “I just don’t feel like it” argument with yourself.

No matter which case affects you, you have already taken the first step. This step will move you towards what has the potential to become a non-productive habit.

As a performance, business, and mindset coach, one of the questions I frequently pose to my clients is, “If you were your own employer, would you be receiving a raise or getting fired”? The vast majority of my customers laugh at this question. Then think it over and admit that they probably would lose their jobs right away!

Why is it so tough to actually get things done?

You are not going crazy, and neither are you being unproductive. When you first started your company or your professional, you focused on getting going. In the beginning you were undoubtedly intent on gaining as much knowledge as you could. You hoped that you would get things going and be able to support yourself financially. When you started your company, you had an urgent need for income. That fueled a strong desire to see its success from the beginning. After that you established a rhythm and now have a reliable source of revenue. That eliminates the stress of the day-to-day money concerns. But now with the pressure off we need a new kind of drive. Since the desire brought on by money desperation is no longer there, even tasks that were once simple may suddenly seem challenging to you.

Make a shift in your motivation and keep moving forward.

Even though desperate motivation can work for a while as you get your business off the ground, once the income starts to flow, it has the potential to make you less motivated. This kicks off a cyclical pattern of highs and lows that I call a “roller-coaster effect”. You are going to feel exhausted and even sick to your stomach as a result of the roller coaster ride that is going on in your business.

It might be difficult to break the cycle of desperation as a source of motivation, but you can make progress by altering the sources of your inspiration. The stages that are outlined below can assist you in the process of building your business.

  1. What is the cost of remaining where you are at this moment?

Consider what will happen in the future and calculate the price you will have to pay if you continue as you are. Spend some time really experiencing it and seeing how your ideas shift as a result of doing so. Now put these feelings to work for you. Use them as a source of motivated energy to generate the results you want.

  1. Shift your attention elsewhere.

You need to know that where you direct your focus is where you will find yourself. Therefore, rather than fixating on the unproductive downward spiral, start focusing on where you want to go. Concentrate on the steps that you need to take if you want in order to accomplish your goals.

  1. Determine your goals and keep a record of your daily activities.

If you don’t have a specific goal in mind for your daily job, it might be easy to lose focus and end up occupied with activities that won’t lead to the outcomes you seek. If you keep a log of what you are doing, you will be able to identify the things that are distracting you and take steps to eliminate them. When a client comes to me for coaching, and it seems as though they are on a roller coaster, one of the first activities I have them complete is to keep a log of what they are doing every 15 minutes for a few days. There is no use in trying to conceal from yourself where and on what you spend the majority of your time. It’s possible that the results of this experiment may take you by surprise.

  1. Assemble a responsible party group.

We all tend to believe the untruths that we tell ourselves. These untruths are the notions that cause us to become mired in our thinking. Because of this, having a team of people who are accountable to each other is essential to your success. They can assist you in making the mental shifts necessary for success. And they do it in a manner that is beneficial to you. They will resist our thinking if it doesn’t sound right. This push-back serves to jolt or shock the pattern of thought that we are struggling with.

5. Evaluate your performance on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.

Reviewing your business expansion plans on a consistent basis is required for every strategy. If you don’t take the time to reflect, you’re going to realize that you’ve veered off course. Then you won’t get the outcomes you desire. When you do an assessment, you should pay close attention to the aspects in which you are succeeding, as well as those in which you may stand to improve.
